Kept by Zoe Winters

April 13, 2010

Often, when linked to a blog post that has something to do with self-publishing, I’ll see Ms. Winters pop up in the comments with intelligent and informed things to say. So she’s joining Joe Konrath in my head as a writer/advocate of self-published work.

About damned time I got around to reading her free novella, Kept.

At 21K+ words, this is a satisfying and engrossing read that’s perfect for your evening at home or a few hours in the sunshine (or even a well-earned break in your cube…shhh). The story is about Greta, a cat-shifter, who, finding herself in mortal danger, must put herself in the care of stranger with a dubious and dangerous reputation. The part of the possibly evil and definitely powerful sorcerer is played by Dayne: one of those over-capable, loner, sexy curmudgeon characters (like House, right?) who’s not sure he can bothered by this unwanted responsibility. But once he decides to accept it, can he keep from scaring her off?

The characters are excellent and play off each other very well. Even in such a short work, Ms. Winters does a lovely job giving us characters that grow and grow together. The story is well paced, and the writing entirely professional. There are a few love scenes, as, be assured, this is a romance. I would not categorize them as explicit.

So, Three and a Half Cookies for Kept by Zoe Winters. You’ll find a PDF download at the link above, and a range of formats available via Smashwords.

Believe me, no one’s more surprised than I am that I just had two good picks in a row. I must be doing something right…

Thank you for the lovely review! Glad you liked it. I’m told by my CPs that Claimed and Mated (the other two novellas in the Blood Lust book coming out next) are better than Kept. I very much hope that readers agree!
